The former Director of the Dublin Theatre Festival and Sydney Festival will begin in May
Following much speculation, Fergus Linehan has been appointed as the new director of the Edinburgh International Festival. Linehan has considerable experience in the arts having worked very successfully at the Dublin Theatre Festival in his native Ireland and from 2004-2009 as Chief Executive and Artistic Director at Sydney Festival in Australia. From 2010-2012 he worked as Head of Music at Sydney Opera House.
He is currently Director of Warehouse Arts, working with arts organisations around the world, and Festival Director of Vivid LIVE.
Linehan said of his upcoming role: ‘I look forward to safeguarding the founding principles of the Festival in ways which are engaging and relevant to all. In particular I look forward to moving to Edinburgh to serve the devoted festival-goers and artists from Scotland and around the world.
He continued: ‘Successful festivals respond to both place and provenance to create a unique identity and this is particularly true of Edinburgh, the pre-eminent Festival city.’
Linehan is currently based in Australia and will begin his new role in a part-time capacity from May 2013, with a view to planning the programme for 2015 - before becoming Festival Director and Chief Executive of the Festival full time from October 2014. Linehan is expected to stay in the post for five festivals, until 2019.
