Michael Rooker is to star in 'Guardians of the Galaxy'.

'The Walking Dead' actor will play one of the leading superheroes in James Gunn's upcoming Marvel film, reports Deadline.com

Rooker's role will be as Yondu, who is described as a "game hunter of a primitive tribe native to Centauri IV, the first planet system to be colonized outside of the Sun's solar system".

He will join the current cast of the Disney flick, formed of Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Chris Pratt as Star-Lord and former WWE wrestler Dave Bautista, who will portray Drax the Destroyer.

It is rumoured Gamora's villain, Thanos, may take on the role of anti-hero in 'The Avengers 2', directed by Joss Whedon, which could see Saldana and her castmates cross over into other comic book films.

Shooting for 'Guardians of the Galaxy' is scheduled to begin in June for a August 2014 release date.

Rooker's film credits include Alan Parker's 'Mississippi Burning', Tony Scott's 'Days of Thunder' alongside Tom Cruise and George P. Cosmatos' 'Tombstone'
