Matt Smith was seen dangling from the TARDIS as scenes for the 'Doctor Who' 50th anniversary special were filmed in London on Tuesday (09.04.13).

The iconic blue Police Box landed in Trafalgar Square for the shoot and hundreds of fans came out to watch the scenes unfold.

At one stage the TARDIS was seen being lifted by a crane with Jenna-Louise Coleman - who plays new companion Clara Oswald - inside while Matt was hanging onto the bottom as the Doctor.

However, the 30-year-old star was not allowed to shoot all the stunt scenes himself and a double was used for a sequence where the space craft flew past Nelson's Column - the famous memorial to Admiral Horatio Nelson which stands at 169 ft 3 in (51.6 metres) tall - even though Matt wanted to do it.

Speaking in a video diary of the shoot released by the BBC on the official 'Doctor Who' website, Matt said: "It's very exciting. I'm trying to persuade them to actually let me go up, because I'll get to see all of London and it will be, you know, cool."

The scenes also included a team of actors dressed as armed police officers and at one point the Time Lord was seen carrying a sealed envelope.

Despite the busy schedule, Matt still found time to chat to fans and sign autographs.

On Monday (08.04.13) more on location filming took place at Tower Bridge and in front of the Tower of London where Jemma Redgrave - returning in her role as UNIT officer Kate Stewart - joined Matt and Jenna.

The 50th anniversary special will be aired in 3D in November and sees David Tennant return as the Tenth Doctor and Billie Piper as his companion Rose Tyler.
