Lennon festival gets underway in Sutherland
The John Lennon Northern Lights Festival opens today in Durness in Sutherland, with a host of bands and artists expected to make appearances over the three days
The location was chosen due to the musician’s links with the community – Lennon often visited the village when he was young and has distant relatives still living there.
Sir Peter Maxwell Davies will perform a rare piano recital; while King Creosote, Blazin Fiddles and poet John Cooper Clarke are also due to attend.
The festival was given the blessing of Lennon’s family and widow Yoko Ono.
His sister Julia Baird commented: “My brother would have been proud and flattered by his inspiration being celebrated in such a fantastic way.
“Durness meant so much to him and it is wonderful that his links with a part of the world he loved are being highlighted.”
