Sam Raimi has hinted 'Oz: The Great and Powerful' will transport viewers to an exciting land of magical adventure

Sam Raimi wants audiences to feel "real escapism" watching 'Oz: The Great and Powerful'.

The 'Spider-Man' trilogy director has stated he wants the upcoming adventure film about the infamous sorcerer - a loose prequel to the 1939 classic 'The Wizard of Oz' - to be a magical experience for the whole family.

He explained: "I hope a mother and father believe they can bring their kids to see it and feel like there's something in it for the parents and the kids.

"A great adventure that's fun and feels like real escapism. I hope it's totally immersive, like you've been to a world you've ever seen before."

The director and cast - including James Franco as Oz, and Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams as a trio of witch sisters he falls in love with - are adamant the film isn't a remake of the Judy Garland-starring original film.

Sam said: "I think 'The Wizard of Oz' is such a great film and I would never attempt to remake that. You could call 'Oz' a prequel, that would be accurate - but I didn't have to re-invent any of that fantastic history."

Actor James added to Total Film magazine: "I thought it would be tricky to do a prequel to a movie that is so beloved. But I saw that they'd have room to create a fantastical world using all of the great technology of today that's been developed since 'Avatar' and 'Alice in Wonderland'."
