Tom Daley: Splash has been successful
Tom Dales insists 'Splash!' has been successful because it can encourage people to take up diving
Tom Daley thinks 'Splash!' has been a success, regardless of its critical reception.
The Olympic bronze medal-winner isn't fazed by the harsh comments his ITV1 diving competition - which sees celebrities pitted against each other in a bid to perform the perfect dive on live TV - has attracted and insists the real merit of the show is encouraging people to give the sport a go.
He explained: "It's light-hearted family entertainment on a Saturday night. It's amazing to have a minority sport like diving on prime time TV. If 'Splash! can encourage even a handful of people to take up diving, it will have been a success."
The 18-year-old star - who cites his dream diving partner as Cheryl Cole - insists his heightened fame hasn't affected his life and he is just a normal schoolboy, although he still can't get over the amount of inappropriate female attention he gets.
Tom added to Britain's OK! magazine: "I don't see myself as a heartthrob at all. It's all quite surreal. There are always some interesting messages on Twitter.
"At school I'm just Tom. I got to lessons, hand in homework and have to sit exams like everyone else. There are quite a few elite athletes at my school, so there's not extra attention there, which is nice."
