'Catfish: The TV Show' stars Nev Schulman and Max Joseph say their new MTV reality show has turned them into the "closest thing there is to internet police"

'Catfish: The TV Show' star Nev Schulman says the show has turned him into the "online relationship police".

The actor and filmmaker Max Joseph believe they are the "closest thing" to internet police since creating the MTV reality show - which follows people who meet on the internet, develop a relationship, and fall in love without previously meeting - and Nev joked he "encourages" people to create fake relationships online.

Speaking at last night's MTV Programming Launch for 2013 at the ME Hotel on London's The Strand, Nev told BANG Showbiz: "As a victim of an online relationship fraud and as someone who somewhat considers himself to be the online relationship police, if you will, then obviously I don't want to be out of a job so I encourage, to some extent, people exploring fake relationships on the internet.

"So I think what we are doing really successfully with the show is bringing up for discussion, getting young people talking about the way they use social media and hopefully giving them some good values and conduct code moving forward."

Max added: "We are about the closest thing there is to internet police."

The pair have got to know a number of "tell-tale signs" that a catfish - a person who fakes their identity online - tends to use, such as telling people they are a model, doctor or architect.

Nev explained: "After a season of doing this there are a few tell-tale signs that we've identified and we'll go back and forth telling you what they are.

"If the person claims to be a model, doctor or architect, any amazing career that somehow involves modelling and travelling to distant, exotic places, is generally a go-to life for many catfishes. But that isn't to say models can't be lonely and looking for love online, but it's unusual.

"Incredibly dramatic lives is also something to watch out for. If there's a string of very serious illnesses or family tragedies then these are the things that get used to illicit sympathy in relationships."

'Catfish: The TV Show' opens with a double bill on Monday (21.01.13) on MTV at 10pm.
