Emmerdale's Matthew Wolfenden thinks his alter-ego will end up with Alicia Metcalfe.

The 32-year-old star - who plays David Metcalfe in the soap - believes the confused businessman is destined to be with the brunette beauty, who he married in a sham wedding before she went into prison so he would be her son Jacob's legal guardian, despite his feelings for girlfriend Priya Sharma (Fiona Wade).

When asked if he thinks there's a chance David will realise Alicia - who is played by Natalie Anderson - is the love of his life, Matthew said: "Yes, absolutely. I think and feel that's the way it's going and it's what the viewers want. I think it will happen ... but not yet."

While Matthew expects David to end up realising his true feelings for Alicia eventually, he admits his alter-ego thinks he is "in love" with Priya.

He added to Soaplife magazine: "As daft as David is, I think he kind of does know and he knows how much he's hurt her but he pretends it's not happening.

"I don't think he really understands his own feelings. At the moment he's saying it's all about Jacob because he's got this new kind of son who he thinks of the world of.

"I don't know if he even realises he has feelings for Alicia mixed it too.

"It's such a weird situation. On the one hand he does love Alicia as they're this little family unit, even if it's all a bit cock-eyed. But on the other hand, David certainly thinks himself to be in love with Priya."
