Jenna-Louise Coleman was in a state of "bewildered excitement" when she was told she landed a role in 'Doctor Who.'

The 26-year-old beauty will appear as the titular Time Lord's new companion, Clara Oswin, in this year's Christmas special this year, 'Doctor Who - The Snowmen', and despite not being a fan of the show, she admits to being overwhelmed by being given the role.

She said: "I just remember a kind of bewildered excitement ... After I hung up I thought I really couldn't carry on shopping, so I just put the basket down and went for a walk to try to take it all in.

"I told my parents ... my grandparents and my boyfriend, but they were under strict instructions [to keep it a secret]. My grandma, especially, wasn't allowed to tell the entire hairdressing salon.

"I couldn't even tell my friends what part I was trying out for. I pretended it was for something called 'Men on Waves,' an anagram for 'Woman Seven,' because I was auditioning to appear in the seventh series."

Jenna-Louise was so worried she might accidentally let the secret slip that she told her friends she had been turned down for the role.

She added to the Mail on Sunday newspaper: "I thought I was going to have to keep it a secret for months so it was easier to tell them I hadn't got the role. I spun a web of lies."

The 'Doctor Who - The Snowmen' Christmas special will air on Christmas Day (25.12.12) at 5:15pm on BBC One.
