Hugh Jackman hopes to take over as James Bond from his good friend Daniel Craig and regrets not accepting the part initially

Hugh Jackman wants to be the next James Bond.

The Australian actor regrets not taking the part when he was originally approached to play secret agent 007 in the in 2006 film 'Casino Royale' and is now waiting in the wings for his good friend Daniel Craig to give up the coveted role.

Hugh - who is 44 like Daniel - joked to The Sun newspaper: "I will just wait. The good thing about Daniel is he's, what, 62 now, isn't he? He's falling apart at the seams. So I just keep telling him, 'I'm ready, whenever you want to let him go, I'm ready'. The good thing is I have also got a British passport."

The 'Les Miserables' actor has no hard feelings towards Daniel - who he met while co-starring in Broadway show 'A Steady Rain' in 2009 - since he had to prioritise his commitment to playing Wolverine in the 'X-Men' franchise, and was quick to praise his close friend's stellar portrayal of Bond.

He explained: "At the time it was wrong for me, but when I saw Daniel in the movie I thought maybe I should have been more interested, because it was great.

"But I am great mates with Daniel. When he was in Australia we caught up and, you know, no one could have played Bond better."

Hugh will have to wait for his dream role, however, as 'Skyfall' star Daniel has signed up to play the iconic British spy for at least two more films. Sam Mendes' latest chapter in the saga has become the biggest film of all time in the UK, grossing a massive £94,277,612 million in just 40 days.
