Derek Branning is to be killed off in 'EastEnders'.
The character - played by Jamie Foreman - is well known for his vindictive ways, but will not make it past the festive period, although the way in which he dies is being kept a closely guarded secret.
A source told InsideSoap magazine: "Derek is a man who enjoys playing God in other people's lives, but the Grime Reaper is coming a-calling.
"He's crossed so many people and earnt himself plenty of enemies. One of them might snap, with Derek finding out he's not the only one capable of inflicting great suffering. But how his days play out is a closely guarded secret."
His departure will also see characters Bianca (Patsy Palmer) and Dot (June Brown) returning, in what is likely to be one of the most explosive storylines in 'EastEnders' in recent memory.
The source added: "The fallout from what happens over the festive period is going to be absolutely massive.
"This isn't just one person's story, but the climax of all the Branning stories being told right now, the drama will be massive."
Derek first appeared on the soap in 1996, before returning in 2011.
