Maria Connor and Marcus Dent's secret liaison will have explosive consequences on 'Coronation Street'.

The brunette beauty's ex-boyfriend Jason Grimshaw will cause a dramatic scene in the Rovers Return pub after he discovers Maria dumped him for her gay best friend.

Actress Samia Ghadie - who plays hairdresser Maria on the ITV1 soap - told Inside Soap magazine: "All hell breaks loose. Jason is in the pub, and goes mental when he hears the news. He feels completely betrayed by Maria and by Marcus, who he considered a friend. Marcus is the last person Jason thought would stab him in the back.

"Maria realises it's kinds of controversial that she and Marcus are together, but she isn't prepared for Jason's reaction and the fight in the rovers. Maria is embarrassed to be in the middle of such a scrap."

The actress' alter-ego is left "mortified" after resident gossip Sean walks in on her and Marcus canoodling, and ends up accidentally spilling the beans to Jason herself because she feels so nervous.

Samia said: "They're both mortified. Maria would rather it have been anyone else in the world - she knows [Sean]'ll go off and tell the whole street. It's the last thing they need so soon into their fledging relationship."

However, the biggest issue with their newfound romance is that midwife Marcus (Charlie Condou) is still struggling with his sexuality after coming to terms with the fact he has real feelings for Maria.

She told Inside Soap magazine: "He's finding it much more difficult than Maria to cope with. It's much more of a change for him, as he's never been attracted to a woman before. They have to help each other through this..."
