'Downton Abbey' writer Julian Fellowes wants to introduce an Asian character to the series.

The show - which takes place in the early 20th century - has recently finished its third series, but Julian is sure if it does come back for a fourth he will include a role for an actor from an ethnic minority.

He said: "The show certainly ought to have an Indian character from that period.

"You have to work it in a way that is historically believable but I am sure we could do that."

Although the only future planned episode is a Christmas special, Julian is pleased with how the first three series have been received and how the characters - played by a cast including Dame Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery and Hugh Bonneville - have developed.

He said: "I felt the second series was more solid than the first because we knew who they all were.

"And now we are really involved with them and that takes you forward another step.

"I am pleased with all of them really. It sounds rather smug but I have been very happy."
