Gary Barlow has admitted last year's 'X Factor' contestants weren't "good enough".

The Take That singer - whose act Marcus Collins came second in the 2001 competition - thinks the standard of competitors this year is much higher and he is delighted with the way the show is progressing.

He said: "My complaint at the end of last year is I thought the contestants weren't good enough. I thought we had a pretty average year last year and coming back this time I am really stoked. I think the show has been great this year

"Ultimately people are tuning in for the talent.

"I don't know what's going on with the figures but if they are going back up it's because people are seeing talent on there."

This year, Gary is in charge of the Over 28s and he wants to change the perception of the category as being a "joke".

He added: "We hate this name, the overs. It sounds like it's over already. It sounds like the name of my next band!

It has been a joke category over the last few years and I even christened it the 'over and outs' last year.

"They always save this category for the characters and the people who aren't that good but people vote them back in.

"I am pleased to have them this year because there is proper talent.

"That is the goal - to change the way people perceive this role."
