Simon Bird admits he was cast in 'The Inbetweeners' by accident.

The actor - who shot to fame playing Will McKenzie in the E4 comedy - says the show's creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley had wanted him and co-star Joe Thomas to help write the series but had to ask them to audition for the roles of Will and Simon respectively as they had run out of time.

Simon said: "Iain and Damon originally hired me and Joe as writers. Then they ran out of time to cast Will and Simon, so we auditioned."

Simon admits they weren't initially sold in the idea as they had been doing "more surreal and gentler" comedy but soon changed their minds.

He added to attitude magazine: "I think I missed something at first, and Iain and Damon managed to take that typical teen comedy - really rude, with no sort of depth - and add real characters and a sense of irony to the whole thing."

'The Inbetweeners' also stars Blake Harrison and James Buckley as the sex-obsessed schoolboys, playing Neil and Jay respectively.
