Dan Dare takes to the skies again
- 28 August 2007
Comic book hero Dan Dare is to be resurrected for a new series of adventures published by Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Comics.
Created by illustrator Frank Hampson, the British sci-fi hero was hugely popular in the 50s and 60s as part the Interplanetary Space Fleet, and graced the pages of boys’ comic The Eagle.
In the new series the character will come out of retirement at a time where Britain is the world’s only superpower and nuclear war has ravaged North America and much of Asia. Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future was written and drawn in a 1950s style but stories were based in the futuristic setting of the late 1990s.
The new stories will be created by award-winning comic writer Garth Ennis, who said: 'Dan Dare is the quintessential British hero. He’s our Captain America, our Superman, our Batman – he’s all of them rolled into one. He’s the original and the best.'
