Coronation Street's Gloria Price 'not a nice mother'
Sue Johnston's new 'Coronation Street' character, Gloria Price, is "not a very nice mother," to her landlady daughter, Stella.
Sue Johnston's 'Coronation Street' character is "not a very nice mother."
The former 'Brookside' and 'The Royle Family' actress makes her entrance on the ITV soap tonight (29.08.12), as Gloria Price - mother of Rover's Return landlady Stella - and immediately starts interfering in other people's business.
Sue told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "Gloria's a funny one really. She's sort of an ageing hippy and likes to say it as it is, which for me means she's totally insensitive to other people, particularly her daughter.
"She's not a very nice mother, either. She doesn't exactly build Stella's self-esteem, she's very critical and she's got a quite an acid tongue.
"'Coronation Street' writes brilliantly for characters like that, so she has some cracking one-liners."
Sue had a small stint on the show in 1982, her first big acting role, but admits she was a little starstruck when she met today's stars of the soap.
She added: "I was a bit giddy when I saw them all. It's a very strange feeling because you have to divorce what you see on telly and get to know the real actors.
"I called Craig Charles by his character's name, Lloyd.
"I immediately apologised, but he said he'd been called worse."
Sue is also looking forward to working with Michelle Collins, who plays her on-screen daughter, Stella.
She added: "I'd never worked with her before but I'd met her at a lot of functions and she's lovely.
"It always helps if you know someone and you like them. You can relax with them."
