Neil Davidge composed "heartfelt and emotional" tracks for the 'Halo 4' soundtrack.

The composer - best known for his work with Massive Attack, who's albums he has worked on since the 90s - has replaced Martin O'Donnell as chief composer for the fourth game in the series, the first in the 'Reclaimer Trilogy', and has attempted to produce music which tug at the emotions of game players.

He said: "We've used a very broad palette of sounds. It's experimental but it's also heartfelt and emotional - a collaboration of orchestral, organic and digital sounds."

Neil added he and orchestrator Matt Dunkley - who has previously worked on movies including 'The Dark Knight', 'Black Swan' and 'Inception' - have produced a "unique" 'Halo' sound, different to previous games.

He added: "It's different. It's not a revolution of the 'Halo' sounds but it's definitely an evolution. One of the key things I wanted to do was to move it forward. Marty's thoughts for the previous 'Halo' games were very inspiring and he really did shift the genre to a much higher standard than previously seen.

"But a lot of games have caught up since then so I wanted to push it that bit further again, which I think we've managed to do."

Martin used a range of different sources to produce sounds for the game, from traditional synthesizers to choirs.

He added: "There's a lot of orchestral work but that's very much mixed with electronics and some very outrageous and distorted sounds.

"There's a male voice choir and also the London Bulgarian choir on there too, along with a couple of solo voices as well."

Neil has also working with 14 pioneering electronic musicians on a remix album of the tracks he's produced for 'Halo 4', including contributions from DJ Skee, Gui Boratto, Caspa, classical rock group Apocalyptica and ex-Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha.

'Halo 4' launches worldwide 6th November exclusively on Xbox 360. For more info visit
