Bristol scoops UK comedy crown
The home of Little Britain character Vicky Pollard and The Friday Night Project presenter Justin Lee Collins has been named Britain’s funniest city.
Bristol has seen off competition from Birmingham, Liverpool and London to take the satirical crown according to researchers from Reader’s Digest magazine.
The poll saw researchers head to eight cities in eight regions to stop 50 passers by, challenging them to raise a laugh. The good people of Bristol rose to the challenge, with 72% of those approached willing to participate in the experiment, giving an overall humour rating of 68%. Scotland’s participants meanwhile were rated fifth in the poll, with Glasgow scoring 48%. Cardiff limped in last, with a measly score of 29% barley even cracking a smile. The poll highlighted Britain’s penchant for dirty jokes, with half of those taking part described as risqué.
