Nigel Havers has agreed to stay on 'Coronation Street' into 2013 despite agreeing to appear in pantomime this Christmas

Nigel Havers has signed a new contract to stay on 'Coronation Street'.

The 61-year-old actor - who plays conman Lewis Archer in the ITV soap - was thought to be leaving after he agreed to appear in pantomime 'Jack and the Beanstalk' in Southampton this Christmas, but bosses have persuaded him to stay into 2013.

A source said: "Reports of Lewis being killed off were grossly exaggerated. The bosses love the way Nigel portrays suave Lewis - and so do the viewers - so it's great that he is going to be with us well into 2013."

His character has previously been involved with a number of ladies on the Street and it is expected his womanising ways will continue.

The source added to the Daily Mirror newspaper: "Everyone knows he has form for charming Audrey, Rita and Deirdre and word is he could easily have other lovely ladies in his sights."

Nigel - who is also known for his role in 1981 movie 'Chariots of Fire' - joined the soap in 2009 before taking a break from 2010 to 2012.

In that time he appeared in 'I'm A Celebrity' and 'Downton Abbey'.
