'EastEnders' Phil Mitchell will try to prevent his son Ben from confessing to Heather Trott's murder.

Ben killed the launderette worker by bashing her over the head with a photo frame and while his dad (played by Steve McFadden) has tried to cover up for him ever since, the youngster's guilt gets to him and he tries to confess to the police.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "It's a race against time as Phil heads to the police station in a desperate attempt to stop Ben from revealing the truth."

Along with the possibility that he could lose his son to prison, Phil is also set to be dumped by his fiancee Shirley Carter after she discovers the truth.

The bolshy blonde breaks off her engagement after discovering Ben (played by Joshua Pascoe) murdered her best friend Heather and feels she has no choice as Phil kept it a secret from her.

A source said: "The Mitchell family find themselves at the centre of a hate campaign. The Albert Square residents are quick to either shun them or publicly lash out. And as the reality of the tragic situation dawns on broken Shirley (Linda Henry), she's left with no other choice but to walk out on the man she loves - for good."
