St Vincent - Marry Me (4 stars)

This article is from 2007.

St Vincent

Oddballs make the best music and Tulsa-born singer-songwriter Annie Clark AKA St Vincent is further proof of that. Marry Me is a bizarre hotchpotch of higgledy piggledy melodies, high-pitched harmonies, sweeping strings and harps, horn snatches, tinkling pianos and warm, acoustic guitars, all driven by Clark's swoonsome soprano and unique storytelling, and it makes for truly compelling listening as a result. Kate Bush devotees will adore this inventive debut collection of beautifully crafted eccentric cabaret pop; a special record indeed from a remarkable new talent to be treasured. Play once and prepare to be hooked.
