Joe McElderry to headline Pride Glasgow 2012

The Cheeky Girls, Lloyd Daniels, Ryan Jagger and Barbara Bryceland also on the bill

Hear ye, Glasgow dwellers: July heralds the return of Pride. With bells on, from the sounds of things too.

‘Pride is definitely back with a vengeance, bigger and better,’ explains festival director Ross Stevenson. ‘From the feedback and communication we got, it seems like people really missed it last year. It’s the first time we’ve had such a large sponsor in the form of AXM Club Glasgow and a big headline act.’
The headliner in question is Joe McElderry, winner of some TV show called X Factor in 2009.

Stevenson says, ‘We’ve been doing the event since 2004 and always had good music acts, but getting Joe was one of the most exciting things so far. We always want to make sure we get acts that are relevant and please the crowds.’

This year’s event will of course contain the traditional parade (Sat 14 Jul), starting at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum at high noon, and ending at George Square, which will host entertainment and stalls during the afternoon and the much-awaited street party, with other musical acts including The Cheeky Girls, Lloyd Daniels, Ryan Jagger and Barbara Bryceland.

There will be a community space, where you can get more information on the ongoing Equal Marriage campaign and visit stands from local organisations such as LGBT Youth Scotland, aimed at 13 to 25-year-olds in the gay community, the Terrence Higgins Trust Scotland, the Scottish Transgender Alliance and student groups. The days surrounding the parade (hereby known as Pride Fringe) will also see special events in local venues, including a Bear Night at The Underground (Fri 13 Jul), and the Pride Awards (Fri 13 Jul, Underground), recognising local groups and organisations who have made a real difference in the scene. Keep checking the Pride Glasgow website for details.
