'Emmerdale''s Matthew Wolfenden is hoping for a "fairy-tale ending" for his on-screen alter-ego.
The ITV1 soap's upcoming storyline will see Matthew's character David Metcalfe propose to his ex-fiancee Leyla's (Rokhsaneh Ghawam-Shahidi) sister, Alicia Gallagher (Natalie Anderson), in a bid to be able to look after Leyla's son, Jacob (Joe Warren-Plant), whilst Alicia is in jail - not realising she is madly in love with him.
The actor said: "To be honest, he'd probably run a mile if he realised how she really felt about him! He certainly wouldn't be getting down on one knee for her."
But the 32-year-old star - who won reality show 'Dancing On Ice' earlier this year - is hoping that things might work out for the best for his character.
He explained: "Personally, I'd love to see David and Alicia together. There's been a brilliant build-up to all this, and it's so well-written.
"David's totally oblivious to the reality of the situation. But if those two were to get together properly after Alicia comes out of prison, it could actually be the perfect fairy-tale ending..."
Discussing 'Emmerdale's upcoming plot line, Matthew added that David just wants to prevent Jacob from having to live with dad Justin Gallagher's (Andrew Langtree) fiancée, Talia (Carolynne Poole).
Matthew added to Inside Soap magazine: "Alicia's utterly shocked!... He sees her as a good mate, and he's doing this for little Jacob. David's just being practical - and let's face it, he hasn't completely moved on from Leyla at this stage."
