'Coronation Street's disabled character Izzy Armstrong is to become pregnant.

Wheelchair-bound Izzy - played by Cherylee Houston - will discover she is pregnant with boyfriend Gary Windass' baby in a ground breaking storyline for the ITV1 soap, and TV executives are concerned with making the plot as realistic as possible.

A 'Coronation Street' insider told The Mirror newspaper: "'Corrie' has never shied away from tackling sensitive storylines. In recent times they have had the teenage lesbian love affair between Sian Powers and Sophie Webster, Sean Tully and Marcus Dent's gay marriage, Lesley Kershaw's Alzheimer's and Carla Connor's rape.

"With all those plot lines producers have researched the relevant topics to make sure it is presented accurately and they will do the same with Izzy's pregnancy.

"They will make sure they establish exactly what complications could occur during the pregnancy and how likely it is the baby could inherit Izzy's condition."

The 37-year-old actress suffers from the same condition as her on-screen alter-ego - a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome - and has been wheelchair bound since the age of 23.

TV executives are conducting thorough research, including speaking to sufferers who have had children, to ensure the storyline is as realistic as possible.

The source added: "It is very clear that this is a sensitive subject and it will be treated as such.

"Cherylee is absolutely thrilled that she is being allowed to take on such a challenging plot."

The storyline will see Izzy worrying the baby will inherit her condition. Former soldier Gary will tell factory worker Izzy that he is not ready to become a father, but she will insist upon looking after the child herself despite falling ill.

I am a mother of 2 and have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. With our first pregnancy I went into premature labor at 24 wks and spent the next 13 wks on bedrest and in the hospital part of the time. At delivery, the baby almost died from complications... I would LOVE to be able to talk with the producers about what it is like to be pregnant and have EDS... there are so many issues that EDS moms go thru. I am a volunteer representative with CEDSA- Center for Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Alliance, and I could put them in touch with many EDS moms who would be happy to share their experiences! Please have them contact me!~

I'm sure the producers of the show and Cherylee are quite aware of all the issues surrounding pregnancy with EDS, and the support out there such as "Ehlers-Danlos Support UK and the HMSA (hypermobility syndrome Association in which one of the leading experts of EDS in the UK Prof Rodney Grahame is a contributor... But others may not and I do hope they link information for those interested in knowing more about EDS...
