'Red Or Black' will not air live when it returns to ITV.

The game show caused controversy last year when winner Nathan Hageman - who scooped a £1 million prize - was revealed to have an assault conviction, while two other contestants were also kicked off the programme because of their backgrounds, so it has been decided to pre-record the gambling contest so competitors can be thoroughly checked out.

Meanwhile, in a further change the giant roulette wheel has been scrapped after the Gambling Commission told ITV it glamourised gambling and objected to the fact there was no skill involved in the show.

Instead, the show will end with The Vortex - which sees contestants having to predict how long a ball will take to descend a mini velodrome.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "It will still be as tense as the roulette wheel -- it could even be more exciting as the ball will hang around for longer."

Discussing a possible end to the show, the insider added: "We had planned a game where people have to get the ball into a red or black hole. It would have been like a pinball board, where how hard you send the ball running and when you flick the ball determines where you end up."

Hosts Ant and Dec will begin filming next week, staging a series of games between sport stars including Robin Van Persie, Kevin Pietersen and Mark Ramprakash.

This year's prize will be £500,000 per show, which could roll over to reach a maximum of £3.5million.

'Red Or Black' returns in the autumn and is expected to take the time slot before 'The X Factor' on Saturdays.
