Coronation Street's Maria needs advice
Coronation Street's Samia Ghadie wants to give her on-screen alter-ego Maria Connor some love advice.
Samia Ghadie wants to give her 'Coronation Street' character some advice.
The 29-year-old actress - who plays Maria Connor on the ITV1 soap - is worried that her on-screen alter-ego is falling for her gay best friend, Marcus Dent and wishes she could tell her to be careful.
Samia told Inside Soap magazine: "The fact that Maria may have developed feelings for Marcus shocked me when I first read the scripts. She should know better than that - she's been with enough blokes and had enough failed relationships to know when to steer clear!
"If I was Maria's mate, I'd take her to one side and quite light-heartedly say, 'Just be careful what you're doing.' He's an openly gay man, so there's not much future in it. There would always be something missing between them."
Samia revealed the single mum is at first oblivious about her feelings, until salon owner Audrey Roberts confronts her.
She said: "Audrey notices before Maria does that she's probably getting a little too attached to Marcus.
"She keeps talking about Marcus in the salon, and tells Audrey she's taking him out for a drink at the Rovers. But she seems a bit too excited and starry-eyed about it all.
"Audrey later gets Maria alone and says quite bluntly, 'You do know he's gay and it's never going to happen?' That hits Maria like a bolt out of the blue, and after she joins Marcus, she feels really awkward being alone with him. So she tells him she needs to go home, and makes a quick exit."
