Clare Grogan of Altered Images - interview

The singer and actress talks to us ahead of the band's appearance at the Rewind 80s Music Festival

First record you ever bought
Rock On by David Essex – still an amazing and weird sounding record.

Last extravagant purchase you made
A vintage Chanel dress. I just had to have it.

First film you saw that really moved you
Meet Me In St Louis – what a tear-jerker!

Last lie you told
I usually have to tell the occasional white lie to my daughter who is very excitable. So to save us all having sleepless nights I sometimes pretend that things aren’t happening when they actually are … like Christmas, birthday parties etc. So Christmas morning is a really big surprise for her. She’s at an age now, though, that she is working it out herself.

First movie you ever went on a date to
Blade Runner, at a late-night screening. Will always remember.

Last time you cried
I cry everyday, I can’t help myself. Today it was at the thought of dancing around our living room with my sisters to Donna Summer all those years ago.

First thing you do when you’ve got time off work
Play Moshie Monsters with my daughter Elle and put a washing on.

Last great meal you cooked
Last night, stir fried prawns and aubergines with garlic and chilli and coriander with jasmine rice. Simple, but tasty.

First crush
James Dean – with a passion.

Last book you read
A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick. A tale of love and madness – loved it.

First great piece of advice you were given
Get over yourself!

Last time you were star struck.
Meeting Rita Tushingham was rather special, I did a wee job with her and got to tell her A Taste of Honey is one of my favourite films.

First thing you’d do if you ran the country
Throw a party. And make everyone clear up the mess afterwards.

Last meal on earth – what would it be
My Mum’s moussaka – it was the biggest treat ever when she made it.

First song you’ll sing at karaoke
‘Born This Way’ by Lady Gaga – it brings out the karaoke in me.

Last time you exploited your position to get something
No comment.

First time you realised you were famous
Being recognised in NYC as a teen on a visit with my family.

Last time someone criticised your work
My husband regularly tells me where I’m going wrong …

First three words your friends would use to describe you
Leave that to them, please.

Last time you made an impulse buy and regretted it
Too many mistakes in the past so cured myself of that one. If I see something I love I leave it and go back a week later and see how I feel.

First concert you ever attended
Roxy Music at the Apollo Glasgow with my big sister Margaret.

Last time you bought someone flowers
Last Saturday, for my guitarist Chrissie who played her last gig with me for a while, as she is about to give birth to twins.

First object you’d save from your burning home
My first edition Peter Pan that my Great Aunt Winnie gave me.

Last funny thing you saw online
Jon Ronson singing – sorry Jon [see below].

First job
Shop assistant in a shop called Bankrupt Stocks – you can imagine. I was 13. Child slave labour is the phrase that comes to mind.

Last person you fantasised about
Elizabeth Taylor … imagine even being her for a day at any point in her life.

First word you spoke
Ditty … for dirty. My Mum was definitely a bit OCD.

Last crime you committed
Bank job – don’t tell anyone.

First song at your (potential) wedding
‘The Dashing White Sergeant’ – we had a ceilidh!

Last song at your funeral
‘Happiness’ by The Blue Nile.

First person you’d thank in an award acceptance speech
Myself. For the fact I’m still standing …

Last thing you recommended to someone
Listen to my advice.

First thing you think of when you wake up in the morning
Ooh, I need a wee wee.

Last thing you think of before you go to sleep
Must remember to do my tomorrow’s ‘to do’ list – which I never do.
