“Classical Idol” voting for prestigious awards
- 15 August 2007
The most influential and highly esteemed awards ceremony in classical music’s calendar is changing its voting system this year to a Pop Idol-style international vote in its quest to find the Artist of the Year. The Classic FM Gramophone Awards competition covers 13 countries on four continents, reaching an estimated 11 million listeners, whose votes are counted alongside the votes of Gramophone Magazine readers. The vote will provide the most wide-spread results about classical music ever recorded. James Inverne, the editor to Gramophone Magazine hopes to build on the success of previous audience participation television talent contests. He said: “It’s not quite Classical Idol but there’s no doubt that it’s not just pop and rock that has its own true superstars.” The winner of the competition will be announced at a ceremony on 3 October.
