Will.i.am paired 'The Voice' contestant Sophie Griffin with J Marie Cooper because he wanted to "challenge her".
The Black Eyed Peas singer made the shock decision to put the 17-year-old singer through after her battle round performance of 'Firework' by Katy Perry against experienced singer J Marie, 27, last night (22.04.12) and admitted he was surprised by good she was.
He said: "J Marie is power house, Sophie, I want to challenge her. I want her to feel it's impossible, to bring the best out of her.
"I thought J Marie had it all sown up, and I thought and I felt bad for pairing them. But then Sophie is all like dun de dun dun!
"Sophie, when you came on this stage, I forgot you were 17 and I thank you for that.
"And, J Marie Cooper super-duper... you know, 27, that's the age I was when I met Fergie. 17 is the age I was when I started the Peas.
"Now I have to choose which version of myself to move forward with. This is hard, this is very hard. Okay, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the person I was when I was 17, so I'm going to go with Sophie."
Will.i.am also chose Yorkshire teenager Frances Wood ahead of Kate Read on the BBC One show despite repeatedly insisting Kate has a better voice.
There was also a big shock on Danny O'Donoghue's team as he chose nervous, lifeguard Aleks Josh over children's entertainer Emmy J Mac, who looked furious with the result.
Jessie J's competitiveness was evident as she encouraged her acts, including Cassius Henry - who beat David Faulker in their battle round performance of 'Beat It' - to scream in their fellow contestant's faces.
Other acts to make it through to next week's live shows include Leanne Mitchell, Ruth Ann St Luce, duo Matt and Sueleen, Becky Hill, Adam Issac and David Julien.
