Investigative journalist Donal MacIntyre believes crime is a normal part of life for some British children

Donal MacIntyre says crime is a part of life for British kids.

The investigative journalist believes children growing up on some of Britain's council estates think of crimes such as joyriding and car theft are par for the course in day-to-day life.

Discussing his new programme 'At Home with the Noonans' about the notorious Manchester crime family, he said: "Kids are never too far removed from that whole gang essence- it's in the air, it's in the ether, in the discussions, the conversations - who to avoid, who not to avoid.

"Stealing cars isn't regarded by those kids as a serious crime. It's like me growing up in Ireland and robbing orchards... I'm robbing orchards and robbing cars is a moral equivalency these days for those kids."

However, Macintyre says there is hope but worries many youngsters are guilty due to associations with their families.

He exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "The police will say, 'You're a crime family, you've committed crimes, we will treat you as someone with a propensity to commit crime', which in one way you can absolutely understand.

"On the other hand... it doesn't often help when they're being continually harassed by the police. Plenty have made the leap, so it is possible, though sometimes there are practical issues"

Donal's new show 'At Home With The Noonans' starts April 22nd on Crime and Investigation Network.
