Scottish Album of the Year Award 2012 – Long list announced

Conquering Animal Sound

The long list of nominations for the inaugaral The Scottish Album of the Year Awards has been announced, after 12 months of organisation and deliberation.

The 20 albums chosen cover a wide range of genres and include many well-known bands - from post-rockers Mogwai to indie band We Were Promised Jetpacks – and were a cumulative list nominated by 100 industry professionals, journalists, bloggers, radio presenters and music fans.

The awards themselves were created by The Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) in association with Creative Scotland, and aim to 'promote, celebrate and reward' the most impressive albums released by Scottish artists in 2011.

Artists such as Happy Particles and Muscles of Joy - who before now have only released their debuts by download or vinyl – will be awarded CD manufacturing runs with production costs covered in the short term by the SAY awards, in order to make use of their heightened profile throughout the nomination process.

From the extensive long list, judges will whittle down the nominees to ten finalists, announced on May 17. Should the ten titles chosen by the panel not include the album voted for by the public via the SAY Awards app and website, then the judges will demote one of their titles to make way for the public’s choice. These ten artists will then go on to the awards ceremony at Glasgow’s Film City on June 19 where the judging panel will reconvene and decide upon the winning album.

The winners will then receive a prize of £20,000 (equal to the Barclay’s Mercury Prize), and all nine runners-up will collect £1,000 each.

The awards also look to celebrate links between music and art through a £20,000 art commission, which will be offered to graduates from Scotland’s four principal art schools. The winning graduate will produce ten artworks, to be donated as prizes for the short-listed album finalists.
