EastEnders' Ian Beale is to be ditched at the altar on what would have been his fifth wedding day.
The Walford wimp will see himself cruelly jilted on his big day this summer by fiancee Mandy Salter after actress Nicola Stapleton - who returned to play the feisty blonde after a 17-year absence from the BBC One soap - was written out of the show.
An insider said: "'EastEnders' bosses kept Nicola on for longer than expected as they are building up to a big storyline for Ian."
While it is not yet clear whether the duo's wedding will go ahead before Mandy dramatically flees Albert Square, their relationship has been somewhat tumultuous to date.
Romance sparked between the couple when Ian - played by 'EastEnders' veteran Adam Woodyatt - rescued the troubled blonde from her cruel boss in the lapdancing club she used to work in, but she went on to repay his kindness by sleeping with Ricky Butcher (Sid Owen).
However, Ian's teenage daughter Lucy (Hetti Bywater) should be thrilled by Mandy's sudden departure as she has been doing everything in her power to break up the relationship in recent weeks.
Nicola told The Sun newspaper: "I've had a great time at 'EastEnders', working with friends old and new. Who knows whether Mandy will return? Let's hope it doesn't take another 17 years!"
