Joe McElderry is to appear in the 'Coronation Street' musical.

The singer - who won 'The X Factor' in 2009 - will perform in the finale of 'Street of Dreams' when it comes to his hometown of Newcastle on May 29 and 30.

Joe - who went to visit the set of the ITV1 soap - told Newcastle's Evening Chronicle: "I'm a huge fan of 'Coronation Street', so I'm in my element. I'm fortunate in my job that I meet loads of amazingly talented people, and I'm always really professional and never ask for pictures, but I've been running around the set all day taking pictures on my phone like a proper fan - it's been brilliant."

"I'm really excited that they asked us, as I'm such a fan. It's a massive production - a 'Moulin Rouge' meets 'Coronation Street'."

Joe will sing 'Ghosts -Take My Hand', written by 'Street of Dreams' composer Trisha Ward, which celebrates the iconic characters of 'Coronation Street'.

Paul O'Grady will present the show, guiding the audience through momentous events in the soap's history encountering well-loved characters and guest stars.

Kym Marsh - who plays Michelle Connor in the soap - will be taking on the role of Elsie Tanner, while West End star Jodie Prenger will also be taking to the stage as a later incarnation of Elsie during the 1980s.

The musical will open in Manchester in May.
