'Waking The Dead' is reportedly set to return for a Christmas special with the possibility of a new series.

'Waking The Dead' is set to return for a Christmas special.

The BBC police drama - which started Trevor Eve, Sue Johnston, Tara Fitzgerald and Wil Johnson before it was axed last year - could be back on screens for a festive episode, which could in turn lead to a new series.

Wil told The Sun newspaper: "There is talk of doing a Christmas special. I wouldn't be surprised if we do - there's such a demand for it.

"I miss being on the set because it was a quality show to work on. A great cast, great guest artists who came in and wonderful directors - that's rare."

A source added: "A Christmas special would thrill fans and could lead to another series."

'Waking The Dead' ran for a successful nine series between 2000 and 2011 and pulled in up to 9.5 million viewers at its peak.

After the show was cancelled, Tara was given her own spin-off series, 'The Body Farm', which followed her character Dr. Eve Lockhart as she set up her own experimental forensic establishment.

The programme, which also starred Keith Allen, ran for one season before being cancelled.
