An old character is set to make a shock return to 'EastEnders' tonight (13.01.12) for Pat Evans funeral.
The whole of Albert Square will turn out in force to pay tribute to hard-nosed matriarch - who died on New Year's Day (01.01.12) - but viewers are in for a huge surprise at the end when a familiar face reappears.
A show source said: "Pat is 'EastEnders' - she was the heart and soul of the show and bosses have pulled out all the stops for her funeral."
The scene will be filmed today and will be aired after the closing credits of tonight's episode.
Secrecy surrounds the identity of the returning character but contenders include Pat's former love rival Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) and her son Simon Wicks (Nick Berry), who moved to New Zealand more than 20 years ago.
Producers of the BBC One soap are keen to pay tribute to Pat - who was played by Pam St Clement and was famed for her love of big earrings - with tonight's 40-minute episode as she was such a loved character.
A source said: "Not only is the episode extra long with plenty of nods to the iconic lady, it really is the end of an earring.
"We're hoping everyone dons their biggest and tackiest earrings to mark one of the saddest days in Walford's history."
