Berlin, Germany

Berlin is a great city in which to wash away the post-Christmas blues – there’s a party going on every night in the capital of Germany. Take a break from the all-nighters with the Berlinale in February. Berlin’s International Film Festival goes on for two weeks, showcasing the best in art, film and glamour. If classical music is more your thing, then head over in March for Maerzmusik – the Festival of Contemporary Music. There are plenty of cheap Berlin hotels to consider but make sure you book early for these events though; and from January to March there are promotions of up to 50% off. Hotel de Ela is great value at 20% off the normal price – the family run hotel is just 800m from Europe’s largest department store. You’ll also be in easy reach of Potsdamer Platz, Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate.

Rome, Italy

Rome in spring is beautiful, the city is buzzing with the excitement of the approaching summer and the piazzas are starting to fill again after the cold winter. In February you can enjoy the Lent celebrations in the Vatican City with processions and ceremonies especially to mark the occasion. The cheap hotels in Rome deal has between 20-50% off, meaning you can stay in a hotel in the centre of the Ancient City for less than €14pppn. Hotel Dama has 50% off and is located in the centre just around the corner from the Eternal City and the train station. It’s recently been renovated and each room has an ensuite bathroom, flatscreen TV and Wi-Fi access.

Istanbul, Turkey

If you’re chasing the springtime sun then Istanbul is a great choice for early 2012. February sees the annual fashion fair, as well as the International Gastronomy Festival to excite your taste buds. Of course there’s always the amazing Grand Bazaar in the centre of Istanbul, which combines both food and fashion under one roof. Spring is the perfect time to visit – not too hot, not too cold. The Sultan Hostel is offering beds in private rooms half price. The property has a bar and pub on site and is just a short walk to the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar. You’ll also get breakfast included in the price.

Prague, Czech Republic

A nice fresh walk around Prague is what you need to start the year on the right foot. The architecture here is beautiful and you don’t need to spend a lot to have a great time. Visit at the end of March and you can cheer on the runners in the Prague half marathon before hitting the Easter Markets with a vengeance. You’ll find handcrafted gifts, including wooden toys, crystal, candles, jewellery, puppets and dolls. You can also taste the delicious locally-sourced hot sausages and ice-cold Pilsner beers. Some of the cheap hotels in Prague have up to 40% from January to February, including the Hostel Marabou. You can get a private double with a garden view for just €15.53pppn. You’ll be no more than 15 minutes from the main square, get breakfast included in the price and be in the charming and lively Art-Nouveau district of Zizkov – filled with traditional pubs, cosy bars and cool clubs.
