The best opera and classical music
Mr McFall’s Chamber Tribute to piper and fiddle player Martyn Bennett, who was a great friend of the group up until his death a year and a half ago. His hallmark combinations of electronic bass lines and beats with folk tunes, whether original or traditional, are set beside the almost completely unknown Cuban composer Fabio Landa, who mixes Ravel-like instrumental colours with Afro-Carribean rhythms. Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh, Thu 26 Oct.
The International Classical Season: The Thomaner Choir with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra Opening concert of this year’s international series brings the choir that Bach sung with as a boy. Almost 800 years old, it is a cultural institution steeped in history, including having Bach as its director for 27 years, but their performance of his B minor Mass promises to be as fresh as when it was first penned. Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, Sun 29 Oct.
Soundings: Festival of Sonic Art Keep up to date with the latest happenings in the international world of electro-acoustic music, whether from renowned experts in the field such as Pete Stollery and Garth Knox of the Arditti Quartett or the current crop of Edinburgh University students who show what can be done in diffusing some classic pieces. Reid Concert Hall, Edinburgh, Fri 27-Sun 29 Oct.
