Eat, sleep and breathe with Fránçois from Fránçois & the Atlas Mountains

A questionnaire about food and the touring musician

Fránçois Marry is fuelled by a combination of herbal tea, techno, chocolate and Cognac – in varying quantities, depending on where the tour van is stopping that day …

What time is breakfast?
7am at the hotel before a long drive.

Tea or coffee?
Herbal tea if I stay at the back of the van snoozing with Indian chanting in my headphone. Coffee if I'm the driver high on techno music to keep me alert.

Smoking or non-smoking?
Non-smoking and bossing around the smokers in the band.

Sweet or savoury snacks?
Chocolate and nuts.

What food do you miss when you tour?

Who’s the best cook you know?
Tracyanne Campbell from Camera Obscura, and also Tara, both in Glasgow!

What’s on your rider?
A bottle of Cognac (we often get it in France) and a newspaper (we never get it. I can't believe it's easier to get a bottle of alcohol than a paper!)

Which country/ city has the best food?

Germany has the best breakfast buffet, France has the best dinner… if you're not vegetarian. UK service stations are the best, especially the farm one in the Lake District.

Do you eat out a lot?
Nowadays yes. Because I don't have a home, I can't invite people round at mine for supper.

Do you drink onstage?
Water is the most delicious drink onstage, but I lose more than I absorb.
