Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill are leaving 'Doctor Who'.
Show boss Steven Moffat has confirmed the pair - who play the Doctor's companion Amy Pond and her husband Rory Williams - will depart in a "heartbreaking" plot in the next series.
He said: "The Ponds will be rejoining us next series.
"But the final days of the Ponds are coming, I am not telling you when and I won't say how. But that story is going to come to a heartbreaking end."
Steven revealed the pair's departure will pave the way for the introduction of a new companion for the Time Lord, who is played by Matt Smith.
Speaking at a screening of the show's forthcoming Christmas special, he said: "And then the Doctor is going to meet a new friend and I am not going to tell you about he, she or it."
Matt admitted he is "disappointed" to see his co-stars leave but is already looking ahead to the future.
He said: "We have had the most incredible journey and we had to hold hands at first when we joined. It is very disappointing but this show is about change. It is always about looking forward."
The show's official twitter page revealed further information about the new companion will be released tomorrow (16.12.11).
