Musicians descend on Glasgow for pipe fest

Glasgow is gearing up for this weekend’s World Pipe Band Championships, as thousands of musicians arrive in the city for the event. Piping Live! has attracted bands from as far afield as Brazil, Oman and New Zealand to take part in the competition on Glasgow Green. Around 8,000 musicians will perform for 225 bands, with the spectacle tipped to match last year’s record 50,000 spectators. The championships are expected to generate some £10 million for the city’s economy. Chief executive of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, Ian Embelton said: “The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a fantastic event, but no other city could bring together 8,000 musicians. There is nothing close to it in the world.” The event will broadcast on August 19, following the huge success of a BBC documentary filmed last year.
