Katy Armstrong's nativity birth
Coronation Street's Katy Armstrong is set to have her baby while acting out a nativity play dressed as the Virgin Mary
Coronation Street's Katy Armstrong gives birth while dressed as the Virgin Mary.
The brunette student - who is portrayed by Georgia May Foote - goes into labour while acting out a nativity play in Weatherfield after filling in for Faye Windass (Ellie Leach) at the last minute, but Anna Windass (Debbie Rush) has to deliver the baby when the ambulance doesn't turn up on time.
Georgia said: "Katy gets through most of the nativity, but when she's standing over the crib, she gets one big pain and realises it's not a false alarm! Everyone thinks her acting is really realistic, but it's actually the labour starting."
Katy's boyfriend Chesney Battersby-Brown (Sam Aston) is forced to steal a bike in order to get to the birth of their little boy, Joseph Peter, in time after his van breaks down.
She added: "Chesney is working and dressed as an elf when the call comes. His van has broken down - but he does everything he can to get there.
"When he does get there, he's shocked. They never expected things to happen so quickly - and for it to be in a manger with him dressed as an elf and Katy as Mary!"
The pair chose to name their child Joseph due to the biblical connotations attached to his birth and his middle name Peter is a tribute to Chesney's late dog Schmeichel, who was put to sleep earlier this year and named after former Manchester United footballer Peter Schmeichel.
However, Georgia expects the young couple to "struggle" with parenthood at their first attempt.
She told Inside Soap magazine: "I think they'll struggle. It'll be a shock to the system - they haven't had much life experience."
