Joni Mitchell signed by Starbucks

Starbucks has secured a deal to distribute singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell’s new album through its outlets worldwide. The move follows a similar deal with Paul McCartney, which helped shift 447,000 copies of his new album Memory Almost Full after its release last month. McCartney was consistently played to coffee drinkers around the world, with Starbucks subsequently taking credit for 47% of sales. Starbucks set up the label Hear Music with the Concorde Music Group. Mitchell said her first collection of material since 1998, entitled Shine, is “as serious a work as I’ve ever done”. Her 10-track album includes nine original songs, with an adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s poem If. Shine will be released around the world in the week beginning September 24 and in the US and Canada on September 25.
