Janet Devlin's heartbreak over grandfather's death
Janet Devlin will miss her grandfather's funeral to perform on tomorrow night's (15.10.11) 'X Factor' following his shock death on Wednesday
Janet Devlin will miss her grandfather's funeral to perform on tomorrow night's (15.10.11) 'X Factor'.
Despite the 16-year-old schoolgirl - who is bookies' favourite to win the ITV1 show - being "very shocked" at 83-year-old Michael's sudden death on Wednesday, she is to continue in the competition because family members claim it is what her grandad would have wanted.
Meanwhile, Janet's mum Patricia has been assured 'X Factor' bosses are looking after the Irish teen as she comes to terms with her grief.
Patricia told the Irish Daily Mirror newspaper: "It all happened so fast so we really weren't expecting it and of course Janet was very shocked. But I have been assured she is being looked after and it's best she stays in London.
"'X Factor' said she could fly straight home but Michael wouldn't have wanted that, he was her biggest fan and he was backing her every step of the way.
"It's tough because Michael was here on Sunday night watching the results show and he was so proud. Then he was rushed into hospital on Tuesday and put on life support and he died on Wednesday night."
An 'X Factor' spokesperson added: "Janet's grandad passed away so she isn't just feeling herself but she's had a chat with her family and they have decided she has to perform."
Janet - who wowed judges Kelly Rowland, Tulisa Contostavlos, Louis Walsh and Gary Barlow with her rendition of Coldplay's 'Fix You' on last Saturday's show - is now keen to "channel her energy" into performing in memory of her grandfather during this weekend's love and heartbreak theme.
An insider said: "All of the contestants have rallied round her. Janet will be focusing on her performance and channelling all her energy into her song in memory of her grandad. She wants to make him proud."
