Emmerdale actor Mark Charnock admits his character Marlon Dingle's onscreen affair with Laurel Thomas has ''come out of nowhere'', which has led him to compare the situation to film 'Brief Encounter'
Emmerdale's Mark Charnock thinks his onscreen affair has "come out of nowhere".
The actor - who plays Marlon Dingle in the ITV1 soap - is so shocked by his alter-ego's onscreen romance with Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy), who is married to vicar Ashley Thomas (John Middleton), that he compares it to 1945 film 'Brief Encounter', which sees a woman being tempted to cheat on her husband with a stranger.
He told ITV1's 'Lorraine': "It's been romantic. We've tried to play it and the story's been structured in a way so it's more like 'Brief Encounter' than anything else.
"It's a sweet romance and they're fighting their feelings for each other, y'know they don't want to have every fibre of their beings telling them that they don't belong together.
"Its come out of nowhere, they did the kids club at the village hall and just had one of those nights here they saw each other in a different light and suddenly it just starts to escalate - this is the way it's been structured, its not been wound down in the last two weeks its lasted a few months, and tonight there's a real sort of relationship".
The onscreen couple have already shared a kiss - but Charlotte explained the affair is set to be much more than just a one-off smooch.
Speaking on 'This Morning', she said: "The story will run a long time and it is an emotional affair more than a physical affair.
"Its' not like she's being seduced by this new man who's come into the village and it's not like one of them is at fault. They've actually done nothing wrong.
"It was a peck really, a peck with intent. It would be easier if she had had some drunken, mad passionate thing with a guy she didn't know, but he lives in the village, she's fallen in love with him she has to see him every day in the shop, the pub, the street. It's a really sweet love story."
