Shona McGarty thinks her 'EastEnders' alter-ego has a "warped view" of relationships.
The actress - who portrays troubled teen Whitney Dean in the BBC One soap - explained after being sexually abused by stepdad Tony King (Chris Coghill) and forced into prostitution by evil ex-boyfriend Rob Grayson (Jody Latham), she finds it difficult to know who to trust.
She said: "Whitney has a warped view of relationships. There hasn't been a man in her life she could really trust. She thought she loved Tony and didn't realise he was abusing her."
Despite having escaped Rob's evil clutches in March, Whitney has still been watching her back for fear he may return - something which looks set to happen over the coming weeks.
Shona added to Soaplife magazine: "She's been looking over her shoulder ever since she escaped from him in March.
"When I researched the whole area of sex exploitation I found out that these are organised crimes and victims often end up staying with the perpetrators because they fear for the safety of family members."
