A group of 35 'X Factor' hopefuls were given the chop from the Boot Camp stage of the competition yesterday (15.08.11).

The wannabe stars were axed from the ITV1 show - judged by Gary Barlow, Louis Walsh, Tulisa Contostavlos and Kelly Rowland - without even being given the chance to sing, despite some of them having trekked all the way to South London from as far away as Scotland.

While 187 acts had made it through to the Boot Camp stage of the series, Gary Barlow gathered them together yesterday morning to announce not all of them would be given the opportunity to progress to the Judges' Houses section.

He said: "We don't believe everyone standing in front of us has the potential to make it all the way in this competition. Some of you are going home now. I'm so sorry - you're going home."

Tulisa added to the stunned crowd: "This is a tough industry. We've got to believe in you."

With a number of the ejected contestants bursting into tears on the spot, insiders claimed the shock announcement made for "total carnage".

A source told The Sun newspaper: "It was total carnage - a thunderbolt from the blue. All were partying away on Sunday, knocking back free grog and boasting they'd be the next winner.

"Next morning many were in tears after getting the push. Even Simon Cowell wasn't this brutal. They were like zombies, completely dazed."

The current acts will now be whittled down to 32 for the Judges' House stage of the competition next month.
