Jane Asher has joined the cast of 'Waterloo Road'.
The 65-year-old actress will play a no-nonsense inspector in the BBC One school drama and bosses are delighted to have secured her because they have promised the eighth series will be the most dramatic yet.
A show insider said of Jane's character: "Her arrival couldn't come at a worse time. There is trouble between the staff and the pupils - and she will come across it."
Jane will be joined on the show by former 'Silent Witness' star Alec Newman, who will take on the role of the school's new headmaster.
He sets out to improve the school while coming to terms with a traumatic experience in his previous job.
'Waterloo Road' has been a huge hit since it was launched in 2006 and it was recently revealed the BBC were hoping to capitalise on the popularity of the programme by launching an online spin-off.
The new show - which will be available on the BBC website and via the red button service - will catch up with the unruly students who left the fictional school at the end of the last series.
