Carley Stenson: Soaps should go back to basics
Carley Stenson thinks soaps need to go ''back to basics'' to regain their viewers
Carley Stenson thinks soaps need to go "back to basics".
The 28-year-old actress - who played Steph Cunningham in 'Hollyoaks' for more than 10 years - believes long-running shows are having to compete for viewers with the plethora of reality TV shows, such as 'The Only Way Is Essex' and 'Made In Chelsea', that are currently on air.
She exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "It's difficult at the moment because there are so many reality TV shows covering normal scenarios and it a lot for soaps to compete with, which I think is why they're going above and beyond normality.
"But I think they've got to back to basics and think about why people started watching the shows in the first place. They need to really develop the characters they've got, rather than bringing in loads of new ones.
"When there are too many characters viewers get confused and don't care about them. I really do hope the soaps get the viewers back from the reality TV shows."
Carley - who is currently taking part in a Facebook campaign to celebrate the launch of Cornetto Enigma ice creams- thinks ultimately viewers want "escapism" when they turn on their televisions.
She added: "I think people want escapism when they turn on the TV. I know I don't want to see what's going on down the road, I want to have some comedy and drama and to be able to invest in characters."
