Cheryl Cole has helped Joe McElderry to bag a new record deal.
The 28-year-old star - who mentored the 'Popstar To Operastar' champion when he won 'The X Factor' in 2009 - has reportedly assisted the 20-year-old singer in signing a contract with her label Universal.
An insider said: "Joe is thrilled. It looked like he was on the scrapheap but Cheryl has come to the rescue and put in a word reminding bosses what a big talent he is."
It is thought Cheryl was keen to help Joe - who was dropped from Simon Cowell's label just 18 months after winning 'The X Factor' - to show music mogul Simon that they are both able to succeed without him after the Geordie beauty was sensationally fired from the US 'X Factor'.
The source added to The Sun newspaper: "Joe and Cheryl have always had a bond and they keep in touch.
"They both know what it's like to be ditched by Simon Cowell but are determined to make it on their own and show him what they're capable of."
However, Joe will be making a move into the classical world following his win on ITV1's 'Popstar To Operastar'.
Universal said: "Joe is ready for the next stage in his musical career. He will be on its classical label Decca."
